Palo Santo, literally meaning "Holy Wood", in Spanish is a tree that is widely distributed throughout Central and South America. Palo Santo is used in South America much as White Ceremonial Sage is used in North America; to combat negative energy and to cleanse the space. It is often used by ian shaman in sacred plant spirit ceremonies where the rising smoke of the lit stick is thought to enter the energy field of the participants to clear misfortune and negative thoughts and to chase away evil spirits. So, how do we use it? Hold a single stick at a slight downward angle, light the end using a candle or lighter. Allow the stick to burn for 30 seconds or so and then blow out the flame. Blow on the smoldering end to spread the fragrant smoke wherever you'd like to clear or scent the air as you move through your space. Or, light and blow out at above and then place in a fire safe vessel or dish to smolder on its own. Relight as needed.
