Marigolds have a long and rich history stretching back to the Aztecs. They were brought to Europe and widely used by the Spanish and Portugese, not only as food but as garlands and to make dye for cloth. The flowers come in an array of bright golden, orange and red hues. These stiff stems have an orange centre and a ray of dark red brown petals surrounding the flower.
