Lincoln's Letter to Mrs. Bixby Referred to as "the most beautiful letter ever written", President Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby captured the reality of the war and the painful tasks involved as a President. Mrs. Bixby reportedly lost five sons in the war, and President Lincoln offered his gratitude of himself and the nation as a whole, however "weak and futile" the words, in this heartfelt letter.
