A few weeks ago I posted a photo of a “mummy tree”, a tree that was all wrapped up with straw mats. Here’s another one. Boy, that tree must be hot under all that wrapping. I took this photo in July, so it was already super hot outside. This tree wrapping seems to be pretty common. I keep asking my Japanese friends about it and no one can tell me why it’s done. I’m guessing it is some kind of Shinto thing, but I really have no idea. Maybe for the tree’s health? If that’s the case, though, then Japan has a heck of a lot of sick trees because I see this all the time. Anyone know the reason?
